Southern Lehigh U14 Community Service and Charitable Work
"Look up and not down; look forward and not back; look out and not in; and lend a hand." - E. E. Hale The quote above has been modeled by the Southern Lehigh Boys' U14 Soccer Team. Throughout the past six years, members and families of the Southern Lehigh Crew have encountered several instances where players have gone through personal challenges and tragedy - not only as individuals, but also as a team. The adversity placed upon these boys has paved the way for a growth of compassion and personal gratitude not generally obtained at such an early age. These players have dedicated their last year within the Southern Lehigh Soccer League to community service and charity. Individual players have chosen to spearhead separate events being held this school year, all of which are devoted to helping people in need. "SLSL is extremely proud of the U14 Boys for taking the initiative to give back to the community," stated Wayne Hefner, Director of the Southern Lehigh Soccer League. "We feel youth soccer is not only about teaching the kids to love the game of soccer, but also to prepare the kids to be better contributors to the community in which they live." When asked how he felt about the U14 boys volunteering their time to assist in community service activities and their representation of the Southern Lehigh Soccer League, Phil Fowler, head coach of the SL Crew U14 team, said, "I think it's important for all people to volunteer their time to assist the community. Our boys helping others without asking for anything in return helps build character. It's not as important that they represent our team, just that they represent themselves." Coach Fowler has been the head coach of the team since its inception six years prior, and has always promoted a combination of fun and learning - not only on the field, but also in terms of personal development. This charitable campaign kicked off on Sat., Sept. 20, as the team brought a total of 31 people to the Camelot for Children, Inc., 5K Walk/Run, bringing in a total of $600 for the organization. Camelot for Children, Inc., is a non-profit organization located in the Lehigh Valley whose mission is to provide a gathering place for seriously, chronically and terminally ill, handicapped or disabled children. "It is always wonderful to see today's youth getting involved in their community while helping others," said Camelot for Children's Abby Schafer. "The parents of these athletes are to be recognized as well for teaching the value of helping others and leading by example by participating in events like the Camelot for Children 5K, with their children. I would personally like to thank all of the members of the U14 Southern Lehigh Soccer Team for their enthusiasm and participation in the Camelot 5K. It is thanks in large part to you that the day was such a success!" These boys have grown, learned and endured together. They have gathered these life lessons and have, in turn, presented the Lehigh Valley with a group of young men who are rich in empathy and selflessness. As citizens, we can only hope that these wonderful attributes remain with them throughout their lives. Upcoming SLSL initiatives include October's Coat/Cleat Drive, November's Soup Kitchen volunteering, December's Holiday Gift Drive and February's Book Drive.
